The community in The Giver is strictly governed by rules. At one point, Jonas receives a set of rules that he is to follow for his training as the Receiver of Memory. Many of you have stated that some of the rules in the community are ridiculous and unnecessary. Think of the rules that you have to follow at home, in school, and in your community. In this blog post I want you to tell everyone which rules you feel are important and which ones are unnecessary and explain your choices?  Then I would like you to respond to another student's post and tell them why you disagree with one of their rule choices (whether it is a rule they feel is important or one that is unnecessary).

  1. Rule I agree with:
In our school, there is a rule about not bringing in weapons. I think this makes sense and protects the safety of all of us.

  2. Rule I disagree with:
An unnecessary rule in our school is that we cannot have water bottles with us. I think this is completely idiotic and unsafe because people could get dehydrated.

  4. I’ll be going over 2 rules for each of my opinions. In school, we have a rule where we can’t carry backpacks, or even drawstring bags. Now, I see the issue they are bringing up. “Most of the Chromebook breaks were from people dropping their bags, with their Chromebooks inside.” There is a very, very simple solution to this. Carry your Chromebook separately. Most of the students I know agree with this easy solution and agree that carrying a backpack saves tons of time. Which would also eliminate people being late due to packing up, it’s really unnecessary for them to take away your ability to carry any kind of bag because of that. The second rule I disagree with is the dress code. I agree with most of it, but no ripped jeans is a little too far. If you don’t want to look at somebody’s ripped jeans, don’t look at them. It’s a way of expressing yourself and shouldn’t be limited. Even if you have patches on the rips you can’t wear them.. I don’t quite understand why that is, but I think it is unfair. That’s just my opinion though. Now, a rule I agree with, is one at my house. I have to take out the garbage, which is pretty fair. I have to do few chores at my house, which is nice. Taking out the garbage is one of them, and I think it’s a pretty fair trade for living there. I don’t pay the bills, but I can take out the garbage. The final rule I do agree with is me feeding my dog. I would do it even if it wasn’t a rule, mainly because he is my dog. I think it’s pretty self explanatory of why I agree with this, he is my dog and it’s necessary to feed him.

  5. A rule at school we have to follow is no facial piercings. In my opinion I think it is dumb, because how I see it is if your parents allow you to get it done/have it, then you should be fine. A rules at home I have to follow is do the dishes when you get home from school, I think that is important because one when my mom gets home she won’t be crabby and two we have clean dishes. Plus if we didn’t do them they would just pile up then we would have like a sky high pile of dishes, which is gross.

    1. I disagree with your rule about facial piercings. My motto is, dress to impress, or, dress like the job you want to have. If you have a facial piercing, not as many people with take you seriously.

    2. I also disagree with your rule about facial piercings. Kids are too young to have facial piercings. They also might be a distraction to others.

  6. We have a rule in the school that you can't have a water bottle without a note and I disagree with that rule because I think drinking lots of water to stay hydrated is very important.

I have a rule at home that we can't play around in the living room and I agree with that rule because we have a lot of breakable stuff in the living room.

I disagree with not being able to carry water bottles around school because if you spill it on your Chromebook its your fault that your not supposed to have water next to your Chromebook so put your water bottle on the ground when you have your Chromebook out

    3. I disagree with the dog rule because the owner of the dog could be busy and if you are required to play with it it is most likely categorized as a family dog so basically it is yours. plus if you don't give a dog attention they can get mean and you have to deal with a mean dog.

  9. Look let me just say I'm fine with most rules. No talking, distracting. No Shirts with guns, blood, cigarettes, a bit to mature for us. No off topic websites or games (A rule I'm sure most of you have broken at one point or another) It's a computer for learning. But the one rule I don't like is self defense rule. I guess I under stand where they'er coming from. you can't punch or you get in trouble too. But If you punch back you're just showing you don't take kindly to bullies. That shows you will fight back potentially making him stop bullying you or someone else. So if you don't hit you just show you can be bullied. So question, would you rather end the battle or the war? (Please don't answer that question It makes it harder for Mr. Masters to find someone who disagrees)

    2. I disagree with you when you say no running in the halls. I feel that students should be able to go either way in the halls, but no running actually keeps the school safer. This rule is important, because without it, people would be constantly running into each other.

  12. A rule that I feel should be changed is the 1 way hallway rule. It is a good rule, besides the fact that there are classrooms down one of them. Last year, had Mrs. Bennisatto (now Mrs. Depore's Room), then I had Mrs. May. I had to go all the way around the loop most days.
A rule I agree with is that we have to pay if our chromebooks get damaged. I agree with this because, as it is the school's chromebook, it is in our possession. So if we break it, we have to pay for it.

    1. I disagree with you on the one way hallway rule. I think it is necessary to have one way hallways because it keeps people from getting trampled and it allows people to use their lockers easily.

    2. I don't agree that you should pay for your Chromebook damages. Sometimes other kids in the hallways can run into you and cause the damages. You shouldn't pay for damages you didn't cause.

      Delete
    3. I disagree with the fact that you feel the one way hall rule should be changed. Even though the one way hall can be annoying, like the fact of having to walk all the way around the middle block just to get to a class that was ten feet down the original hall, it has benefits. If everyone were allowed to go wherever they wanted, people would be dropping things and running into each other constantly. That is chaotic, and in chaos things get broken and people get hurt. We can't have that.

    4. I disagree with having to pay for the damages on our Chromebooks. I disagree because they gave us Chromebooks thinking we wouldn't break them. We are only 13 years old.

  14. One rule I dislike is the one way hallway. We should go the opposite direction. It would make so much more sense to go the way your classes are on so you don't have to loop all the way back around.

One rule I do l like is you have to eat a lunch. In the lunch room if you don't have a lunch they will know and help you out. Your brain will now have energy and is ready to go.

  15. A rule I have to follow at home that I disagree with is having to have my room clean to be able to go out on the weekends, I disagree with this because if my room is a little messy I should be able to go to a friends house on the weekend. A rule I find important at school to have is treating others with respect because everyone should treat people how they wish to be treated, and everyone should be treated kindly.

  16. One rule at my house is that you have to put your dishes in the dish washer after you eat if the dish washer has dirty dishes in it already, but if the dish washer is clean you have to wash it in the sink then leave it there. I feel this is important because it is easy to do and gives a lot less work on my mom so that she doesn't always have to clean up after 4 kids. A rule that I think is unnecessary in this school is the no water in school and the no backpacks in class rule. You should be aloud to have water in school because it helps people function correctly if they are hydrated. The no backpacks in class rule is very unncessary because they do not get in the way if they are under our seats and people would not be dropping their chrome books as much because it would be safely tucked away in there backpacks. That is what my opinion is on important and unnecessary rules.

  17. In my opinion, I feel that these rules are stupid, we have to plug in our electronics in a charging station, We can't have the wifi unless grades are good and at school the one-way hallways. In my opinion, i think these are stupid as they are a total waste time. for example, I and my siblings put our electronics in their bedroom in a charging station. It just wastes time. The no WiFi kinda helps it helps get our grades up but I never can talk to friends since my data is so limited. The one-way hallways are stupid because you can be late to class.

    1. I disagree with your opinion that one way hallways are stupid. With the flow of how it is set up no one should be late to class. If your locker is too far away just bring your things for your next class with you to your first class. So you won't have to stop by your locker.

  18. I feel that rules such as respect and integrity are necessary. The reason I believe these both are necessary is because there needs to be a certain level of respect between people, and integrity is a must-have; strong morals and principles to follow are always necessary. Without these values, we lose a level of trust and we lose more than we could ever gain without them.

A rule I think unnecessary (in this case it is a law) is we are mandated to give an education to people who do not want an education, if they are not going to try, then they are draining tax dollars. Yes, we should always allow them an education, but we should not be wasting tax money on an education for somebody who clearly refuses to do what they need to do to pass. We could be using that money to ensure the success of other students who do actually want to succeed and graduate.

    2. I disagree with the rule about non-mandatory education. If people in our country are uneducated (to a certain point), the country will not run smoothly. Uneducated drivers will not know how to read signs or know the difference between left and right if they are not educated. How will one get a job (unemployment being a large problem in America) if they are not properly educated? If one does not know how to do math, how are they do get a simple job such as being a waiter/waitress or working retail? It won't only affect those who chose not to be educated, but others as well.I do think that education to a point should be optional, but no education would be devastating to our country.

  19. The only rules that are really important are the ones that protect people from harming innocent things or people, or impeding the public routines in order to disturb others days. I think rules that make things tedious to do because there is so many restrictions aren't fair, unless it's ensuring public safety like making sure people don't make food that can kill you and sell it to people. But rules like you can't have water bottles in class is ridiculous, because it isn't harming anyone.

  20. In our community we need to put on our seat belts as a society rule. I believe we need this rule in our society because if someone crashes into a car and you don't have a seat belt on them boom your dead or seriously injured. A rule that I think is unnecessary is that I have to open up my blind every single morning. My parents think that I need to let some light into my room but it doesn't even matter because i'm never in my room anyways, not until I get home at least. But I always open my blind when I get home but I still get in trouble anyways.

  21. Rules... I think rules like speed limits are very important rules as they keep everyone safe.
I think an unnecessary rule is the one way hallways in the school. I'm a taller guy so I can see over most people and what if your locker is right at the edge of the hall, but you can't get to it? Although it would be a bit more busy, I think that if the one way halls were diminished, the school would run more smoothly.

  22. This rule is a sport rule but I think is really important, this rule is in football and it states you can't hit a player above the shoulder area. This rule is important because guys could get serious injurys that could mess them up their whole life. A rule that I don't like is the rule, is now book bags in the classrooms. I don't like this rule because your locker could be on the other side of the school and you'll have to go to your locker to get it and take a risk in being late, but if you had your book bag you could just carry everything with you.

    1. I disagree with the rule of no book bags being in classroom because it is a tripping hazard kids could fall and so could teachers drew.

  23. One rule that I disagree with is the one way hallway at school. I think that instead of one way hallways they should just stick to the right of the hallway (like roads). That way people can get to there classes sooner, and easier.
One rule I agree with at home is that we have to clean up after ourselves. If we didn’t clean up after ourselves the house would be a mess, and if we wanted people to come over we would have to take the time to clean up. If we did that they couldn’t come over right away.

  24. One rule that I agree with is obeying your parents because it helps you stay loyal and listen to bosses and they can tell you what to do because they have done it when they were young.
One rule that I disagree with is the rule with one way hallways because if you have a locker down a hall and then you have to go all the way around it is just more work and they don´t even help with anything because no one follows them

  25. IF I had to choose any rule I disagree with it is probably the schools policy on lateness, if a student is late for class by 30 or so seconds and has a strict teacher they will be sent down to the attendance office and then sent back, this can take up to 5 minutes depending on where you are. so no the student isn't just half a minute late they are now 5 and a half minutes late. If teachers could act as mini attendance offices and just mark the student late it would save everyone time.
A rule I do agree with is actually a law, I agree with the law on net neutrality. The reason for this is if net neutrality is removed then Internet providers can slow down loading times for other sites, technically disallowing censorship. If censorship is enabled in any way shape or form then free speech will likely fall alongside that. That is why I believe that net neutrality is a good rule.

  26. One rule that I think is necessary is the rule (for my theater group) of no gum or flip-flops onstage. This rule is important because, when you perform, the audience could not understand you because of your gum or you could flash the audience with your chewed-up gum wad. The no-flipflops rule is important because there are many nails, staples, and spiders (among other things) that you could step on.
A rule that I disagree with is the one-way hallway rule. It helps no one because the hallways are just as backed-up. Most people don't even follow this rule, anyway. If my classroom is ten steps away from the opening of the hallway, why should I spend my five minutes having to go around three other hallways to get to that class? That time could be spent doing other, more time-worthy things.

  27. At my house one rule I agree with is that you always have to do homework right when you get home from school. I always get my homework done and it makes it easier for me because I can remember exactly what I need to do. One rule I don't really agree with is as soon as you get done with your homework you immediately must clean the house. It's almost impossible to get everything done by the time my parents get home and it's never completely up to their standards. The rule should at least be modified in my opinion.

  28. I have many rules that I have to follow when I am at home. Most of them ,I feel, are unnecessary but there are a few that are important. My family can't have phones out at the dinner table because it is disrespectful and when we don't have them out everyone can interact more. This can also make us more social. One of the rules that I think doesn't really matter much is cleaning my room before I go to a friends house. It's not like my friend is going to see it and I won't be there so why do I have to do it? Also, if someone was to come over after I left, they should not be in my room.

    1. I understand how cleaning your room can be annoying, but I think that cleaning your room before you go to friends house is a good idea. This will ensure that your room is clean while you're gone and will get you to clean it then so you don't keep putting it off until later.

    2. I disagree with your opinion of thinking cleaning your room before going over to a friends house is unnecessary. We all don't like cleaning our rooms, but its something we all have to do. Cleaning your room before going over to a friends house is a good thing. For example, if you and your friend wants to come back over to your house then its already clean. Then you won't have to worry about it while your friend is over and plus it will be done and out of the way when you get home.

  29. I agree with having to pack my lunch every night. I agree with this because it teaches me responsibility and gives me more time in the morning.

I disagree with the no charging Chromebooks in class rule. I disagree because sometimes people forget and it is not their fault, so the teachers should have a few extra chargers in class. This was the students can still participate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that the rule no charging your chrome books in class is important. People will take advantage of being able to charge their Chromebooks in class. It is also good to learn how to make a routine and how to be responsible and do a simple task that is required. Many teachers have extra computers in their classrooms so people who forget their chromebooks or forget to charge their Chromebooks can still use those and participate.

      Delete
    2. I disagree that kids are not allowed to charge their Chromebooks in class. I disagree because sometimes mistakes happen and maybe your charger is not plugged in all the way or you simply just forgot to charge it. Then you should be able to take it into school and charge it. Yes, some kids will abuse this power and charge their Chromebooks everyday. Those kids should be punished not other kids who just forget once or twice.

  30. One rule I feel is necessary in our community is not to litter. I feel this is an important rule because it helps keep our environment clean and safe, which will then lead to a better world. One rule that I feel is unnecessary in our school is the no water bottle rule. I think it is unnecessary because many kids get dehydrated throughout the day which is not good for your body. I know there are drinking fountains, but lots of the time we don't have enough time to go to a drinking fountain before our next class.

    1. I disagree with you. I think the no water bottle rule is important to keep all the computers and other technology safe to save the school from having to purchase new computers. I agree kids can get dehydrated but there are many drinking fountains located throughout the school that students could easily access.

  31. One rule in my house that I don't like very much is our chore schedule. For example, the kids in my family each take a turn loading/unloading the dishwasher for a month. I feel like this is unnecessary because a month is too long. Oftentimes we forget whose month it is and we could possibly end up doing it two months in a row. I wish it was a week-long span. One rule I think is necessary in my household is that we have to dry, hang, and put away our laundry. My mother puts them into the washer according to what has to be washed that day. This is important because it teaches us how to be responsible, or our clothes aren't getting washed.

    1. I can understand how tedious chores are and how it could get confusing having to make a chart for every month, but I think doing chores could be a way to learn responsibility and to prepare you for when you have a house of your own. Although, an allowance doesn't hurt... :)

  32. A rule that I disagree with is making my bed. My parents always tell me to make my bed but I'm just going to mess it up again in a couple of hours. When I ask them why, they say 'I want it to look nice.' For who? They don't even go into my room that much so why does it matter?
A rule I agree with is not being aloud to have cellphones. But if its lunch or homeroom I think we should be aloud to. If you have your cellphone out during a lesson and your not paying attention then your not going to do as well on the test which might not get you into a good college and a job. I know your whole life doesn't depend on one test that you didn't do well on, but if it's a normal thing to have your phone out during every class then it might effect the rest of your life.

  33. In my opinion, a rule that I think is important is that you need to hang up your clothes. Otherwise, you are going to have a pile of clothes and you will be stressed to hang it up. 35. One rule that I feel is not necessary is no water bottles in the classroom. I think that everyone should be allowed to have water, because it keeps the students hydrated. Not all teachers allow the students to get water if they are thirsty. I believe that students shouldn't be kept from bringing their own water in.
One rule that I find necessary is cleaning up your bedroom. This is something I am required to do at my house, but I find it beneficial. Having a clean room actually makes life less stressful. You don´t have to dig through things to find lost items, or have it a cluttered mess no one wants to enter. Having a clean room makes life easier, and more simple.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe a rule that says you have to clean your room is important. I know a lot of kids hate cleaning their room and I do too, but I believe it teaches the importance of cleanliness. If you never have to clean your room then when you get older you will most likely be a slob. Lets be real here. If you're a slob then people most likely won't have any interest in you because you and your belongings will always be a mess. That is why I believe a rule saying you have to clean your room helps you in the long run.

A rule that I totally disagree with is one way hallways. I get the fact that it is to stop traffic in the hallways, but it gets very annoying when you are rushing to a class. I believe the reason so many kids are tardy to class is because of the rules in the hallway. Many kids have to walk all the way around the school just to get to their class. I don't understand how it would be that bad to have kids going both directions in the hallway. To be honest I think the hallways are going to be packed no matter what rules you have. That's what happens when you have a school with so many kids enrolled. Many kids don't even follow the rule anyway and it doesn't really affect the flow of traffic. For those reasons I strongly disagree with one way hallways.

  37. I don't like the one-way hallways. They are time consuming and make classes difficult to get to. I do like the rule of 5 minutes in between classes. It gives us enough time to do everything I need to.

    1. I disagree about the 5 minute rule. For girls, 5 minutes is not enough time to go to the bathroom, get our books, and get a drink. The 5 minute rule may give your enough time to get everything done but for a majority of us, 5 minutes is simply not enough time.

      Delete
    2. I disagree with 5 minutes because some students have classes on one side of the building and their next class might be upstairs on the other end. Add getting a drink, stopping at your locker and using the restroom and they won't be able to make it to class even if you run.

  38. I disagree with the one-way hallways in our school. The hallways are time consuming if your locker is 10 ft down the hallway and your class is just outside the hallway, so you have to walk all the way around. I agree with the rule at my house of be back before dark. Being back before dark is a good rule because it is for my safety.

  39. I feel an important rule is the rule that you have to be in the class by the second bell. I feel that this rule is important because it would be very chaotic if kids are coming in at random times and the teachers would hate having to keep their attendance sheet out always keeping watch. One rule that I think is unnecessary might not still be a rule, but it was the rule that you are not allowed to keep backpacks on you in the school. This rule does not apply to me, but I have heard from many people that it is a pain and that they need to carry so much. They explain that a book bag is so much easier.

If you could do that, most people would never go to school and everyone would be a nincompoop. On the contrary, I feel that one way hallways are irrelevant. If your class in 15 feet behind you, you cannot get to it! You would have to walk ALL the way around the hallways! It is imbecilic.

  44. A rule that I like about our community is that you are allowed to start driving legally on the road with an adult when you are 14 years old. I like this because I am going to be able to drive myself where ever I want. A rule that I hate is that we are required to go to school. I don't like this because sometimes I want to skip school and stay home and sleep all day or just stay home.

    1. I disagree with the skipping school rule. Although most students don't like school, education is important. Your education can get you into a great college, and even find you a great paying job.

    2. I disagree with the fact that you think going to school should be unnecessary. I believe going to school is highly necessary. Without education than the world would be crazy. The people who did go to school would have to help the people who didn't and the smarter people would have an unhappy life of helping the uneducated.

    3. I disagree with the fact that we should skip school. It's ok if your sick and you don't go to school on that day but if you constantly don't go to school because you want to sleep all day, then that's a different story. If you stay home, you will have to make up a lot of work and that will just be worse for you.

    4. I disagree with your skipping school rule. I think education is important and it is required if you want to get a good job. If kids were allowed to skip, they would make a habit out of it and skip the days we have tests or important assignments due. It is one thing to skip school for doctors appointments and other important business, but not on our own accord.

    5. I disagree that you believe we shouldn’t go to school. School can be annoying at times, but you need to learn. It also gets you to talk to people and gives you something to do, even if it’s annoying. If we didn’t have school we wouldn’t know new things and it get you to move around instead of staying in bed all day, even though that sounds great.

    6. I agree about driving when you are 14 with a parent, but I do disagree about the part that you can skip school. My reason for this is school gives you education. If people had the choice to skip school, the future would be full of people who had no idea what they are doing and just end up making stupid choices. Finally, America would be underdeveloped compared to other country's and probably would get over runned.

  45. A rule I believe is unnecessary is the rule stating we aren't allowed to have water bottles unless we have a doctors note. I dislike this rule because I don't usually have to stop at a drinking fountain between the five minute bells and teachers don't always let us leave the classroom to get a drink. A rule I do like is no running in the halls. I like this rule because if everyone were running in the halls people would get injured, and there would be many traffic jams making people late to class.

  47. A rule I deem unnecessary is that shorts must be fingertip length or longer. My arms (and many other students' arms) go down to my knees, while other students' arms don't go past mid thigh. The length of arms is not the US' common metric system, so it shouldn't be used to measure the length of shorts. Another rule that's unnecessary is how school starts at 7:25 in the morning. Studies show that the human brain isn't fully awake until 10 a.m. If the human mind isn't awake until 10, the first 2 and 1/2 hours are essentially a waste of time. Not to mention, the amount of sleep deprived students are going up because of the exuberant pile of homework we get a night. A rule I think is necessary is the traffic lights and stopping at stop signs. If there were no traffic lights or stop signs, humanity could come to an end because of the amount of people who would disregard common sense and not watch out for one another.

At home, in school, or in our community, rules are a set of guidelines that keep people out of trouble. At school one of the rules is to not bring your chromebook into lunch with you. I totally agree with this rule because you don’t want to spill your drink on it as damages can be very costly. On the other hand, I don’t agree with the one way hallway. Sometimes it will take an extra minute just to go to a class that just would you take you 15 seconds without the hallway. At home, rules are just important. We have a rule of no shoes on the carpet. I agree with this rule because our house is only 1 year old, and we want to keep in the best condition for the longest time. And lastly one rule I don’t agree with is that aren't aloud to have any food or drinks in our rooms. I get why my parents like this, but I am really good about not spilling things. I still don’t agree with that rule.

    1. I disagree with this -- sleep studies are being produced saying that people are not getting sufficient sleep due to the effects of screens such as TVs, computers, phones, etc. REM sleep is affected by the use of screens, and REM sleep is the rapid eye movement (which causes you to "dream"). REM sleep is in cycles of about 1 1/2 hours, which after that hour and a half, you just "sleep" normally without REM. If you are affecting your REM sleep, also referred to as deep sleep, you will be tired and have higher stress levels and less productivity rates.

First, I agree with speed limits because they keep us safe from careless drivers. Second, I support finishing your homework because it's basically a study tool. It will help us do better on tests and exams. Lastly I agree with the golden rule ( treat others the way you want to be treated). I feel that this is very important because it can stop major fights and arguments. Some rules that I disagree with are: First, making my bed. Why should I make when I am going to mess it up all over again in a few hours? Second, not being able to charge our Chromebooks. Our Chromebooks hold most of our books and work. Why would you not want us to charge them so at least we can use them for our next class? Lastly, not being able to go in the front yard alone. I my parents are afraid someone could kidnap me, but I'm just in the front yard. They can see me perfectly out the window. Plus, our neighborhood is pretty safe and their are always neighbors outside.

I guess a compromise could be that the teachers assign homework, but either it is optional, or assign a limited amount.

Also, everyday between sixth and seventh hour, coming from Mrs. Smith’s room, it’d be a lot easier and faster to just take a right and cut through the hall on the way to Mr. Masters’. But no, we have to walk around. And when you only have 5 minutes in between class, a minute or two makes a big difference. I agree with is voting at 18. 67. So I will be going over 2 rules which is one at school and one at my house. So a rule that I completely disagree with at school is that you cannot bring waters bottles to classrooms. I mean that is a ridiculous rule because what if it is a really hot day and you were really thirsty and dehydrated. Everyone would be like oh just go get a drink from the drinking fountain. But would only help you only a little and make you feel a little better. A rule at my house that I do not agree with is that I cannot bring any food into my room sometimes. I think this kinda stupid but I can see why my mom doesn't want me to sometimes because we she doesn't want me to make a huge mess in my room but, to me it would be really nice to have food in my room because I wouldn't have to just wait for a minute just to have some chips outside of my room for just a minute. But a rule I do agree with is that you shouldn't bring weapons to school. I agree with this because well it's pretty much common sense because somebody could use that weapon on somebody and well that wouldn't be very good.

  68. One rule I really hate is the one way hallway rule. It makes it a lot more difficult for some students to get to class on time with all the materials they need. One of the rules that I think is unnecessary and stupid is the no drink rule. If we have a container with a no spill lid, how much harm can it really do. A rule I agree with is making your bed every morning, I feel its a good rule because it makes things look neat and in my opinion Id rather it look neat than messy. If you want to play games do it on your own time at home on a personal computer. It is not fair if I am doing my work in class and other people are just messing around and playing games.
One rule I disagree with is the one way hallways. Many people like them because it keeps a flow of traffic, but there are kids that try to squeeze themselves through the crowd and that causes more of a problem. It is also an inconvenience to kids who have a locker down that hallway. They have to go all the way around and that takes up a lot of time when we only have 5 minutes. I think they should split them down the middle so one side goes one way, and the other side goes the opposite way.

    1. I think it would be easier if we could just go a certain way in whatever hallway we want.

  83. One rule I disagree with is not having water bottles in the school. I disagree with this because people need water. Also it helps some kids brain to help them focus. A rule I do agree with is no bully. The reason I agree with this is bully ruins kids self esteem and it could also leave kids hurt physically and mentally.

  84. A rule that I do not agree with is school starting at 7:25 AM. It would be better if school started around 10:25AM so everyone wasn't so tired. I rule that I do agree with though is the one way hallways. Without them the hallways would be chaotic.

    1. If school started at 10:25 it would end at 5:00. I would like to start school earlier and just get it all out of the way. Also have time for more and different stuff

    2. I disagree with the one way hallways because they are just unnecessary and cause more problems. If someone's class is by the office and needed to get to their locker in the hallway connecting to the music rooms, they shouldn't have to walk all the way around the school. It takes more time then needed and it makes kids late to their classes because they had to follow the one way hallway rule.

  85. A rule for school (hey that rhymed) that I agree with is that we should not wear spaghetti straps alone, because they CAN be a little showy depending on what your wearing. A rule I disagree with is That we should be able to wear hats. As long as they are not covering your face or are not too distracting we should be able to wear them.

    1. I feel that wearing any hats are too distracting. I think that the hats that cover your face are just more distracting than the ones that don't. I believe this rule is necessary.

  86. A rule that I disagree with in school is no backpacks in the classrooms. I think this should not be a rule because a lot of students have trouble getting to their classes on time. Some students have lockers that are all the way across the school, when they have classes upstairs and far away. Lockers do get jammed, and students often times are late because of this. If students were allowed to have backpacks, this wouldn’t be a problem. A rule that I agree with in the school is the one way hallways. Between classes and before/after school, students are swarming the halls making it sometimes chaotic. I believe that with the one way hallways, this keeps students more organized and not pushed every direction in the halls.

    1. I think the no backpack rule has one advantage, people keep their book packs in between chairs and desks and people can trip on them.

  87. A rule I think is unnecessary is the fact that we can't carry water bottles around school. We should be able to carry them with out a doctors note. If you spill it your note going to stain the ground it just water. A rule I agree with is the the speed limit and that you should follow them. With out them people would be flooring it and thats not safe.

  88. One rule I agree with in school is the one way hallway rule because the hallways would be hectic with people going every way in the busiest part of the school. One rule I disagree with is the water bottle ban. This is because the upstairs area as a whole gets very hot, and it's completely pointless to tell some kid they have to run down the hall to get a sip of water.

  89. One rule I agree with in school is the one way hallways. I think having the one way hallways keeps kids from getting pushed around or not being able to get to their class. One rule I do not agree with is not being able to have cell phones out in the hallways or during homeroom and lunch. I understand not in class because they can be distracting but why not in the hallways.

    1. I disagree with one way hallways because kids can be late if they go all the way around so technically its not their fault their late its the school's setup.

    2. I disagree with your opinion on the oneway hallways. I feel that they are just a burden, and hold us back from getting to class as quickly as we'd like.

  90. One rule that I agree with at my house is that before I go to bed I have to set everything out for school the next day. I pick out my outfit, pack my lunch, charge my chromebook, and do my homework. It is easier because then I am not rushing in the morning or forgetting anything for school. A rule I disagree with is the no backpacks rule in the classes. All it does is make kids late for their classes because they had to run to their locker again to grab that classes items. The lockers also get stuck or won't open quickly, and if they have a locker upstairs and the next class downstairs it is just going to cause more problems and make them even later.

  92. A rule that I agree with in school is that there are no backpacks because they do take up space in classrooms. A rule I disagree with is the one way hallways because its not fair for kids to be late because they have to go all the way around.

  93. The rule I feel is most important is to respect others. Respect helps us build a stronger community (not to be confused with the community from the giver) and helps us to see past our differences and get along. I disagree with the rule of the one-way hallways. I strongly believe that they are unnecessary; after all, we ARE old enough to know basic traffic law. Why can't we all just stick to the right side of the hallway (except for when you have to cut across the hall for class)? It would make things much simpler.

  94. An unnecessary rule is school starting so early. Most kids do not get enough sleep anyways. Then they have to wake up early so they can get to school on time. It would be better if school started a little later, like at eight o’ clock. Then it would end at three.

An important rule is to not run with scissors. You could hurt someone or yourself if you do. Why would you have to run with scissors anyway? Why can’t you just walk?
